A gorgeous American style Pale Ale from the people at the Little Creatures brewery based in Freemantle, near Perth, Australia. It is fruity, yet hoppy, full bodied but not overpowering and extremely refreshing. Lovely for a hot summers day (when one finally comes around here in the UK). I first came upon Little Creatures Pale Ale in the Holy Drinker, Clapham, London and was immediately taken by it. I would happily buy it on draft – but unfortunately for me I have only seen it in selected establishments in bottles. I have only tried to Pale Ale so far, but will certainly try and check out the other beers in their range soon.
The Little Creatures brewery has won a number of Australian International Beer Awards including:
- Champion International Brewery 2002
- Champion Australasian Brewery 2002
and the Pale Ale has been named:
- Champion Ale (2002, 2007)
- Champion Bottled Ale (2001)
According to Wikipedia, the name “Little Creatures” is inspired by a song lyric from the Talking Heads Little Creatures album and refers to the live yeast cells that turn the sugars in malt wort into alcohol.
In their own words:
“We love our Pale Ale and throw bag loads of whole hop flowers that we source direct from hop growers in Victoria, Tassie and the US throughout the brewing process. These hops provide the intense citrus and stone fruit characters that we carefully balanced with select speciality malts and a local pale malt made to our own specifications. A beer that’s ultimately refreshing with a distinct bitterness leaving the palette craving for more.” (littlecreatures.com.au/beers)
