This is the best Chardonnay I’ve ever had. Mudbrick Vineyard’s Reserve Chardonnay 2013 is simply perfect. The location is unbeatable on the gorgeous Waiheke Island and this wine is even better.
I traveled to New Zealand for a wedding being held on the beautiful Waiheke Island off the North Island at the Mudbrick Vineyard which is just 35 minutes from the central city in Auckland by boat. The vineyard takes your breath away and then they send the drinks out, all of which are brilliant and in my opinion, world leading.
The one that most got my attention was the Mudbrick Chardonnay. I am not normally a fan of Chardonnay, preferring other varieties most times. However, this was free (as part of the wedding) so I gave it a go. What was noticeable was the smooth taste, fruity aroma and then a lingering buttery finish on a par with good Malbecs.
It isn’t cheap, but then that’s if you can get any at all! The batches are relatively small and reserved for New Zealand and Hong Kong mostly. But, if you do find a bottle I urge you to try it as it has changed my opinion on Chardonnay to the point where I actually drank mostly Chardonnay on the trip instead of the more popular Sav (Sauvignon Blanc) and Pinos Gris.
“Chardonnay is not a well known grape variety from Waiheke – purely because it’s grown is such small amounts, and is usually so divine, it hardly gets the chance to leave the vineyard!
Reserve Chardonnay 2013 (Waiheke Island)
The 2013 Mudbrick Reserve Chardonnay has aromas of lime, white peach, ANZAC biscuits and hot stones. The palate is rich and concentrated with a creamy texture and a long powerful finish.

This rich, complex but beautifully balanced Chardonnay from the 2008 vintage was 100% barrel fermented with 30% in new French barriques. On the nose this wine displays subtle hints of citrus, peach, toasty oak and nut characters. On the palate, refined stonefruit characters are supported by rich butterscotch and savoury notes in perfect balance. The finish is crisp and lingering.” (www.mudbrick.co.nz)
