The Red Squirrel Brewery’s Redtail Citra golden ale is the jewel in their crown. I love Citra based beers and this is a shining example of why.
It is fruity, full flavoured, easy to drink, not too strong and when they have it in stock it is one of my go to session beers.
“Dominant Citra-hop aroma, producing a floral, fresh style with citrus overtones and a smooth satisfying mouth feel.” (Red Squirrel)
The Hertfordshire based brewery is by no means the biggest or oldest (started in 2004) in the area but what they bring is craft beer to the local area which is full of good but very similar tasting real ales, and this taste has been recognised. Red Squirrel London Porter and Redwood American IPA, have both achieved major Camra Gold Medals, with London Porter also achieving a bronze medal in the National Winter Beer Championships and many of their beers taking home gold SIBA Regional awards in 2013.
Being based near then I took a trip to their brewery and went on their brewery tour. It was one of the most informative and interesting brewery tours that I have been on and unlike other brewery tours the beer actually flowed freely so I had my fill of a great deal of their range. Their London Porter is lovely, but still for me the Redtail Citra is the clear favourite. I like that they are constantly experimenting, like some of my other favourite breweries, Brew Dog, Adnams and Meantime. I like that they are not afraid to change their recipe as they go so that each batch could be different if it wasn’t quite what was intended.
They also run the Chesham Brewery Shop which as well as being a shop that stocks a huge range of amazing craft beers from both their own brewery and other genuinely great and interesting breweries like Tiny Rebel and Signature Brew has the feel of a pop up pub. Well worth a trip and will shortly be having a review of its own.
They are a lovely team, with lovely beers and deserve the recognition that is coming their way.
