My first date with my wife was at The Clarence in Balham, where she bought the first round and I knew it was going to be a good date! It quickly became our local as she lived only one road away and the beer selection was very good. In fact, I had my first taste of Meantime London Pale Ale at The Clarence – after my now wife introduced me to it.
Since we first went there 5 years ago The Clarence has had a number of face-lifts but all of them for the better. It is bright, airy and spacious (if at times over filled with people) with good beer choices on tap and in bottles, the food is good and well priced and the atmosphere is the right level of buzzing to catch up with friends and/or wind up for a night out. I went there a couple days ago and had a chorizo scotch egg, foot long hotdog and a fish finger sandwich – all were good portion sizes, well prepared and well priced. I love this pub and if it wasn’t for the wealth of good pubs near our current house I would say that it is a shame that we have moved away from The Clarence.
“A relaxed family environment throughout the day, big screen showing important sports/events etc, table foosball, pacman table for those who remember it! We pride ourselves on creating a fun, relaxed environment for a drink and a catch up, or a banging night out who wouldn’t be impressed! A full roast with great veggie option on a Sunday tops off the week at the Clarence.” (The Clarence)
If you are in Balham pop in – it isn’t on top of the station but you can walk there easily and quickly (as it is on the High Street) and it is worth the effort. Also, check out the Real Kebab Co. opposite for some late night snacky goodness!
