Great food, amazing beer and a lovely building. I love The Old Brewery in Greenwich run by my favourite brewers, Meantime. I had my first outing there this weekend for my birthday and felt right at home and if it was nearer to my home in Tooting Broadway then for sure it would be one of my regulars.
“Located within the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College and a stone’s throw from the world’s last tea clipper, the Cutty Sark, The Old Brewery sits along side Discover Greenwich, a new cultural centre, which tells the story of Greenwich to the World Heritage Site visitors.”
The grounds are lovely, and the food is wonderful. They change the menu frequently but we went to the restaurant and had the devilled whitebait with caper mayonnaise, British charcuterie, crisp rosti, roast field mushroom, spinach, soft poached egg & hollandaise and shoulder of Herdwick mutton braised in Meantime Pale Ale. All were impeccable. I was stuffed and felt we had good value. A great touch which reminded me of Den Dijver was the matched beers with each course, Meantime Kellerbier, Saison 1900, Schneider Weisse and Westmalle Dubble. Each of which was well chosen and as good as you would expect.
We then went to the bar and tried several of the Meantime beers on draught including a cask version of my favourite beer Meantime Pale Ale which was just as tasty as the more carbonated draught version but given the choice I would always choose the latter. I had the Helles and The Famous Belgian which again were good and upto Meantime’s high standard. However, the standout beer for me was the Strawberry Beer. Tasting like a true beer with hints of strawberry and a creamy after taste it really blew me away and I wasn’t expecting it as im not usually a fan of the sometimes overly fruity fruit beers.
The prices were ok, for me neither expensive nor cheap considering the quality and location and the selection of beers was impressive, chosen mainly from Meantime’s Hero selection (http://www.meantimebrewing.com/contact/heroes-and-others). I will definitely go back to The Old Brewery and hopefully during the day to enjoy the beer garden. I just wish it wasn’t so awkward a journey for me to get to.
